Rank tells people how good you are. Challenges tell people what you have actually done.
That is why the system has quietly become the real profile flex in League of Legends. A Challenger border says you climbed a ladder this season. A rare title and a stack of high-tier tokens say you spent years doing specific, difficult things on purpose.
Here is how the whole system fits together, and where it is worth putting effort.
How Challenges work
Challenges are a free achievements layer sitting on top of normal play. You do not sign up for them and you cannot lose progress.
You earn Challenge Points by completing objectives while you play. Every challenge has a Challenge Card listing what counts, and points accumulate as you tick those objectives off.
Those points flow upward in three stages:
- Points progress the individual challenge through its tiers
- Points add to the category that challenge belongs to
- All categories together produce your Challenges Crystal
The Crystal is the number that shows on your profile. It summarises your lifetime Challenges progress, and it ranks from Unranked all the way to Challenger.
Tokens
Every challenge has a Token: a unique icon that represents it and changes colour as you rank it up.
Tokens are the visible part of the system. They appear on your profile, in the lobby and on the loading screen, and anyone can hover one to see which challenge it is and what tier you have reached.
This is the part that produces the flex. A high-tier token on a difficult challenge is immediately legible to anyone who knows the system, and completely invisible to anyone who does not.
Capstones
Challenges are grouped, and every group builds toward a Capstone.
The rule that catches people out: you can only fully master a Capstone by completing every other challenge in its group. Progress on any challenge in the group levels the Capstone a little, but the top tier is gated behind clearing the whole set.
That makes Capstones the most expensive thing in the system by a wide margin. It also makes them the most respected, because there is no way to shortcut one by grinding a single easy challenge.

Titles
Titles are earned by levelling specific challenges to specific tiers.
Once unlocked, a title is yours permanently and you can switch freely between any you own. Titles show on your profile, in the lobby and on the loading screen, next to your name.
For most players this is the single most visible reward the system offers, because unlike a token it is written in words that everyone in the lobby can read.

Leaderboards, and what Master actually means
Challenge tiers do not stop at a personal milestone. Once you rank a token to Master, hovering it shows a leaderboard comparing you to everyone else on your server who reached the same point.
Above that, the tiers are explicitly competitive:
| Tier |
Requirement |
| Master |
Reach the tier threshold for that challenge |
| Grandmaster |
Top 25% of players who reached Master |
| Challenger |
Top 5% of players who reached Master |
This is the detail most guides get wrong. Grandmaster and Challenger on a challenge are not fixed targets you can grind toward in isolation. They are percentile cutoffs measured against everyone else who got that far, so the bar moves as more people finish.
It also means the cheapest route to a Challenger token is an unpopular challenge, not an easy one.
Where the effort is actually worth it
Chase titles before crystals. The Crystal is a slow lifetime aggregate. A title is a specific, reachable target that changes what people see immediately.
Pick challenges that overlap with how you already play. Points come from normal games. A challenge tied to your main role or your main champion costs you nothing extra.
Do not spread thin. Category points reward depth. Ten challenges at a low tier are worth less to your Crystal, and far less to your profile, than two taken seriously.
Watch for the gated ones. Some challenges cannot be caught up on later, because they depend on modes, events or conditions that come and go. Those are the ones to notice while they are available.
Ignore the Capstone until the group is nearly done. Chasing a Capstone directly is backwards, since it only completes when the group does.
Frequently asked questions
Get the tokens without the years
Challenges reward time and specificity rather than skill, which is exactly why they are so hard to fill in later. A challenge you did not chase two seasons ago is two seasons behind.
Our boosters push individual challenges for you, so you can pick the exact token you want on your profile rather than grinding a category you do not care about: Challenges boost.
Choose the challenge and how much progress you want, and the price follows from there.
