Most players treat duo queue as free. You get a friend who will not flame you, someone to coordinate with, and a lane partner you can actually trust. There is no obvious cost, so people assume there is none.
There is one. Riot has confirmed it, and it is larger the higher you climb.
Yes, there is a duo penalty
Riot's lead gameplay designer has stated it plainly: duos face a matchmaking penalty, and it scales with rank.
The mechanism is not a punishment. Matchmaking is trying to produce a fair game, and two people in voice comms are measurably stronger than the same two people queued alone. So the system compensates by giving your lobby slightly harder opponents than your MMR alone would earn.
That is the whole idea in one sentence: you are not matched on your rating, you are matched on your rating plus an estimate of what duoing is worth.
How much harder, by rank
This is the part that matters, and it is not uniform.
| Your rank |
Duo penalty |
| Iron to Platinum |
Essentially none |
| Emerald |
Starts to appear, small |
| Diamond |
Noticeable |
| Master and above |
Largest, and duoing is also restricted |
Riot's stated reasoning for the curve is that coordination becomes more impactful the higher you go. In Silver, two people on voice comms still lose to their own mechanics. In Diamond, two players who can set up a dive on a timer are a genuine structural advantage, so the compensation has to be real.

The practical reading for most of this site's readers: below Emerald, duo as much as you like. The cost is close to zero and the tilt protection is worth more than the penalty.
What matchmaking actually weighs
Riot has never published the formula, which is why this topic generates so much argument. What has been described is the order of inputs:
- MMR
- Role preference
- Autofill status
- Duo status
- Team versus team balancing
Duo status sits in there as its own factor, before the final team-versus-team pass. It is not a rumour and it is not derived from your win rate or your champion pool. It is an explicit input.
Note what is absent. There is no entry for honor, ping count, or how many games you have lost in a row. If you want the long version of that, our piece on whether loser's queue is real covers what the system does and does not look at.
The consequence nobody thinks through
Here is the uncomfortable implication of a penalty that scales.
Above Emerald, your duo has to be better than the penalty, not merely pleasant to play with. The lobby got harder the moment you queued together. If your partner is roughly your skill level and you are not actually coordinating, you have bought a harder game and paid for it with nothing.
That is why the "me and my friend are both Diamond, why are we losing" complaint is so common. Two Diamond players who duo are not playing a Diamond game. They are playing a slightly-above-Diamond game, and they only break even if the duo advantage they actually extract exceeds what the system assumed they would.
Most duos do not extract it. They are in a Discord call talking about something else.
A duo pays for itself when:
- You are a bot lane pair who practise together and share a champion pool
- One of you is genuinely stronger and the other plays around them deliberately
- You communicate about cooldowns, vision and timers rather than socialising
- You are below Emerald, where the penalty is negligible anyway
A duo costs you when:
- You are the same rank and queue together out of habit
- You duo as two solo laners on opposite sides of the map
- You tilt each other, which is faster in a call than in chat
- You are Diamond or above and treat it as free
Who can duo at all
This part changes. Riot has moved the apex restrictions repeatedly, so treat the following as the state of things in October 2026 and check your client before planning around it.
| Range |
Can you duo? |
| Iron to Diamond |
Yes, with the usual rank-proximity limits |
| Master |
Only with someone close to you in rank |
| Grandmaster and Challenger |
No |
There is one trap worth knowing. The restriction follows your MMR, not the emblem on your profile. An account displaying Master while carrying Challenger-level MMR can find itself locked out of duo queue even though the rank on screen says it should be allowed. If duo is greyed out and you cannot work out why, this is usually the reason.
The reason the apex rules keep moving is rank manipulation. Duo at the top of the ladder is the easiest vector for boosting and for trading wins, so Riot tightens and loosens it as detection improves.

Does duoing affect your LP gains?
Not directly. LP is driven by your MMR relative to your rank, which is the same calculation whether you queued alone or with someone.
What changes is the difficulty of the games you are given, which changes your win rate, which eventually moves your MMR. The effect is real but it arrives through your results rather than through a modifier on the LP number itself.
If your LP gains look wrong and you want the actual mechanism, why LP gains stay low walks through it.
What to actually do
- Below Emerald, duo freely. The penalty is negligible and a reliable partner beats a coinflip teammate every time.
- From Emerald upward, be deliberate. Duo with someone who makes the pair stronger, not someone who makes the queue less lonely.
- Pair roles that interact. Bot and support is the obvious one. Jungle and mid is the next best. Top and bot is two people queueing at the same time.
- If you are climbing seriously above Diamond, solo. You remove an input the system is working against you with.
- Watch the tilt multiplier. A duo that spirals together loses more games than the matchmaking penalty ever will.
Climb without the handicap
The short version: duo queue is close to free below Emerald and a real cost above it, and most duos above Diamond are paying a tax they never collect on.
If you want the rank without spending three months working out whether your duo is carrying their share, our boosters play solo on the current patch every day: division boosting, ranked wins, or coaching if you would rather fix it yourself.
