LoL Battle Pass Explained: 48 Milestones, BXP and How to Finish an Act

Elo-Boost Team4 min read

The Battle Pass is the one progression track in League of Legends that does not care how good you are. It does not check your rank, your win rate or your KDA. It checks how much time you put in before the Act ends.

That makes it the most predictable system in the game, and the easiest one to plan around. It also makes it unforgiving, because a missed Act is gone permanently.

Here is exactly how the maths works.

How the Battle Pass works

The Pass runs for the length of an Act, and there are two Acts per season across a three-season year. Each Act brings a new Pass tied to its theme.

The main track has 48 milestones, and each one costs 400 BXP.

That gives you the number that actually matters:

Milestones on the main track 48
BXP per milestone 400
Total BXP for the full track 19,200

Everything else is detail. Your whole Act comes down to whether you can accumulate 19,200 BXP before the clock runs out.

Where BXP comes from

Four sources, and they are not equally efficient.

Missions. The largest and most reliable source. Missions cover matchmade games and rotate through the Act.

Time played. Points convert to BXP at a 1:1 rate through a repeating mission, at 50 BXP per 50 points.

In-client metagames. Riot's side systems feed the Pass too, so progress does not stop when you close a match.

Honor drops. Random drops award 150 BXP at Honor levels 3, 4 and 5, and they land more often the higher your Honor standing sits.

That last one is worth pausing on. Honor is passive BXP: you earn it by not being reported. Players sitting at Honor 3 who could be at Honor 5 are leaving free pass progress on the table every Act, on top of the cosmetics they are not unlocking. Our Honor system guide covers what that costs.

Free versus premium

Both tracks run in parallel. The free Pass is available to everyone; the premium unlocks the rest of each milestone's contents.

Option Cost What it adds
Free Pass 0 The base reward track
Premium Pass 1,650 RP Seasonal Prestige skins, extra skins, Ward skins, Mythic Essence, Ancient Sparks, Orange Essence
Bundles 2,650 or 3,650 RP Everything above plus 10 instant milestones and extra exclusives

The bundles are worth understanding correctly: the 10 milestones they grant are 4,000 BXP of progress, or roughly a fifth of the entire track. If you are buying premium anyway and you already know your playtime will be short this Act, the bundle is the cheaper way to finish than grinding those levels later.

The Epilogue chapter

The track does not simply stop at 48.

Past the main track sits an infinitely repeating Epilogue chapter. It keeps handing out milestones for as long as you keep earning BXP, so heavy players are never actually capped.

For planning purposes, treat 48 as the finish line. Everything past it is overflow value rather than the thing you are racing toward, because the headline rewards all sit inside the main track.

How to level the Pass faster

Group up. The premade party bonus is +30% BXP, and it applies to normal play you were going to do anyway. It is the single largest multiplier available and it costs nothing.

Clear missions before chasing playtime. Missions pay far better per game than the time-played conversion. Playing without checking the mission tab is the most common way people fall behind.

Fix your Honor standing. Free, passive, compounding across every Act you play from here on.

Do not save it for the end. The Pass ends with the Act, and unspent time does not roll over. The players who miss the final milestones are almost always the ones who started in the last two weeks.

Play whatever mode pays. BXP does not care about ranked. If ARAM missions are open and faster for you, take them.

Frequently asked questions

The main track has 48 milestones at 400 BXP each, which is 19,200 BXP in total. Beyond that there is an infinitely repeating Epilogue chapter.

1,650 RP for the premium Pass. Larger bundles at 2,650 and 3,650 RP add 10 instant milestones plus extra exclusives.

Missions first, then playtime, with a permanent +30% bonus for playing in a premade. Honor drops add 150 BXP passively at Honor 3 and above.

No. BXP is driven by missions and time played rather than queue type, so play whichever mode clears your missions fastest.

It ends with the Act. Progress does not carry into the next Pass, so anything unfinished is lost.

It depends entirely on whether you will finish the track. The rewards are heavily backloaded, so buying premium and then not reaching the later milestones is where most of the wasted RP goes.

Finish the Act, not just start it

The Pass rewards are backloaded by design. Everything expensive sits in the final stretch, which is exactly where people run out of time.
