# **Why Are My LP Gains So Low? LoL MMR**

Elo-Boost Team·August 22, 2026·5 min read

You win a game and get 14 LP. You lose the next one and drop 22. Two more wins, two more losses, and somehow you are lower than when you started.

This is one of the most frustrating experiences in ranked, and it is not a bug, a punishment, or Riot rigging your games. It is a specific system doing exactly what it was designed to do, and once you understand it, you can fix it.

## The short answer

Your LP gains are low because **your hidden MMR is lower than your visible rank.**

The matchmaker believes you belong at or below your current rank. Until your visible rank and your hidden rating line up, the system pays you less for every win and charges you more for every loss, deliberately pulling you back toward where it thinks you belong.

## What MMR actually is

MMR stands for Matchmaking Rating. It is a hidden number Riot uses to decide which ten players go into your game. You never see it, and Riot has never displayed it.

Here is the important part: **MMR is your real rating. LP is just a display of it.**

Think of MMR as your actual skill estimate and your rank as a scoreboard trying to catch up to it. Your LP gains are the system's running bet on which of those two numbers is wrong.

- **MMR higher than your rank** → the system thinks you are underranked → bigger gains, smaller losses, pushing you up fast
- **MMR matching your rank** → you are where you belong → roughly symmetric gains and losses
- **MMR lower than your rank** → the system thinks you are overranked → smaller gains, bigger losses, dragging you back down

## Reading your own LP numbers

You cannot see your MMR directly, but your LP tells you everything you need to know.

| What you gain / lose | What it means |
| --- | --- |
| +25 or more per win | Your MMR is far above your rank. Keep playing, you are climbing fast. |
| +18 to +22, losing 18 to 22 | Healthy and balanced. You are correctly ranked. |
| +14 to +17, losing 20 to 25 | Your MMR has fallen slightly below your rank. |
| +12 to +15, losing 25 to 30 | Your MMR is well below your rank. This is the problem zone. |

If you are in that bottom row, the system is actively working against your climb, and no amount of frustration will change the numbers. Only sustained results will.

## How your MMR ended up below your rank

Four things cause this, and most players have done at least one.

**Long losing streaks.** The most common cause. A run of losses drops your MMR faster than your visible rank falls, opening a gap between the two.

**Dodging queue repeatedly.** Dodges cost LP without any corresponding MMR adjustment. Do it often and your rank drifts below your MMR, or in reverse, your LP sits above what your MMR supports.

**Returning after a long break.** Time away causes the system to become less confident in your rating. Rust plus uncertainty is a fast route to a damaged MMR.

**Climbing on a hot streak, then normalising.** If you got promoted during an unusually good run, your rank may have overshot your real MMR. The low gains are the system correcting for that.

## How to fix low LP gains

There is no reset button, no support ticket and no setting to change. There is only one mechanism that works: **win more games than you lose, consistently, over a meaningful sample.**

Specifically:

**Target a 53 to 57% win rate over 50 to 80 games.** That is the range that reliably repairs a damaged MMR. Below 53%, you tread water. Above 57%, you fix it faster.

**Expect it to take 15 to 30 games before the numbers move.** The bands do not correct instantly. You will play a stretch of games still earning +14 while your MMR quietly climbs underneath. Most players quit here, right before it pays off.

**Stop dodging.** Every dodge is guaranteed LP loss with no MMR upside. If you must dodge, do it rarely and deliberately.

**Do not chase losses.** The single most damaging habit is queueing immediately after a bad loss. Tilt-queuing turns one loss into four, and four losses is exactly what pushed your MMR down in the first place.

**Play fewer champions.** A narrower pool raises your win rate, and win rate is the only lever that moves MMR.

## The part nobody wants to hear

If your LP gains have been low for hundreds of games, the uncomfortable possibility is that the system is not wrong.

MMR is a skill estimate built from a large sample of your games. When it says you belong in Gold rather than Platinum, it is usually right. The gap is not a punishment — it is feedback.

That does not mean you are stuck forever. It means the way out is improvement rather than volume. Playing 200 more games at a 49% win rate will not change anything, because a 49% win rate is precisely what produced the current situation.

## Frequently asked questions

Your hidden MMR is below your visible rank. The system reduces gains and increases losses until the two align.

Not officially. Riot has never exposed it. Third-party sites estimate it, but those are approximations based on your recent results, not real values.

No, dodging costs LP but does not directly lower MMR. However, repeated dodging pushes your rank below your MMR, which distorts your gains.

Typically 50 to 80 games at a 53 to 57% win rate, with the first visible improvement after roughly 15 to 30 games.

Yes. Fresh accounts have uncertain MMR, so the system moves them more aggressively in both directions until it settles on a rating.

No. Individual performance does not affect LP in solo queue. Only the win or loss counts.

## Skip the correction period

Repairing a damaged MMR takes 50 to 80 games of consistently winning, and if you could reliably do that right now, your MMR would not have dropped in the first place.

Our boosters play at a win rate far above the range needed to correct it, which fixes the underlying MMR and the visible rank at the same time. Pick your current rank and where you want to be with a [LoL division boost](https://elo-boost.net/boosting/purchase/division).
